An open hosting kitchen in Portland

The homeowners host big family gatherings and wanted a kitchen built for it: more storage, an island everyone can gather around, and a clear line of sight into the living and dining rooms. Demolition turned up a structural problem that could have closed the plan back up. It didn't.

The brief

This was a full kitchen remodel with one clear purpose: make the kitchen the center of the home, for weeknight dinners and for holidays with the whole family.

That meant a more efficient layout, a lot more storage, and better flow between the kitchen and the living and dining rooms next to it. The homeowners wanted a classic look that wouldn't date, with the function of a kitchen designed today.

What we found in the ceiling

Once the old ceiling came down, the reason for a visible sag became clear. A structural beam above the ceiling joists had been built without adequate support.

Fixing it properly required a new engineered ceiling joist system. The catch: the new support post landed exactly where the plan called for removing a wall to open the kitchen up. Hiding the post in a rebuilt wall would have undone the open layout the whole project was built around.

How we solved it

We installed the engineered joist system to carry the beam and take the bow out of the ceiling for good.

Then, instead of walling in the post, we designed it into the kitchen. A shallow custom cabinet wraps the post, built to match the height, proportions and finish of the wall cabinets beside it. It reads as part of the cabinetry, and nobody would guess what's inside. The structure is sound, the plan stayed open, and the homeowners gained extra storage.
